Sonja Moonear, from the Swiss Alps to the world.

Get to know more about our upcoming special guest.

After studying classical music in her youth, Swiss Sonja Moonear traded piano for turntables and a Roland R8. Soon she was completely immersed in the underground scene of her city, Geneva. Next, and in a logical progression, she became a resident of the Weetamix and began to move abroad, acquiring an incredible reputation among artists such as Luciano or Dimbiman aka Zip. Since then she has published on prominent labels such as Karat and Perlon. In addition to all this Moonear is a sound designer for Swiss-French television. In short, Moonear avoids any type of categorization.

This set from Sonja Moonear was recorded live at fabric when she shared the bill with Junkie Inoue and Rhadoo, and it finds her in sinuous, rolling, and groovy form.

Miss Kittin opened the doors, while Weetamix gave her a residency alongside Luciano. During one night in Tokyo, she played after DJ Hell who decided to take her on the Gigolo roster. Musically speaking, she was not on the same side, but she got many opportunities to play her sound in various cities around the globe.

A release on Sonja’s Ruta5 Label

After several collaborations with artists- friends (Serafin, Dandy Jack…) and crews (MUTEK Chile, Soap System Istanbul, Cosmic Chile Zürich), Sonja starts a new LIVE/DJ project named Junction SM in 2004 alongside Dandy Jack. It consists of an impressive combination of live and DJ sessions that lasts for hours. She did several solo-live sets like on August 04 for the Overground festival. Devoted to her studio, she continues to manipulate sounds and silences. Since 2005, the label/collective Ruta5 has been under reconstruction and a bunch of label parties continues to be organized regularly.

One of the underground scene’s most prolific globetrotters, Sonja has been at the forefront of the minimal rising wave since the early 00s. Touted for her distinctive taste in the stripped-back house and intimate techno, the Genevan stalwart became an instant festival favorite after her B2B outings with Nicolas Lutz in 2018 and 2019.
